The 34th INTERNATIONAL CIUTAT DE BARCELONA World Cup Ladies Epee Fencing tournament is to be held on 13rd and 14th February. This competition is ranked as A by the International Fencing Federation (FIE).
The Federació Catalana d’Esgrima and the Real Federación Española de Esgrima, in collaboration with the Ajuntament de Barcelona, the Consell Català de l’Esport, the Unió de Federacions Esportives de Catalunya and the Institut Nacional d’Educació Física de Catalunya, are organizing this prestigious competition in which 114 fencers from 24 different nationalities took part in last year’s event.
The "Ciutat de Barcelona" competition has its origins in the 60’s with the organisation in Barcelona of various epee competitions during the celebration of “La Mercè” (an important celebration in the city) including the "Torneig Internacional Nostre Senyora de la Mercè". This continued as an epee and/or foil competition during the 70’s which is where it began to be called the "Ciutat de Barcelona".
From 1982 the competitions began to increase in standard with the dispute of international foil competitions, but it is not until 1986, in the 10th edition of the "Ciutat de Barcelona", when it returns to it’s origins in Men’s epee, steadily acquiring a high index of participation of elite fencers until in 1989, in the "XIV Trofeu Internacional Ciutat de Barcelona" it was granted World Cup status by the Fédération Internationale d'Escrime, making this competition one of the most prestigious on the world cup circuit.
Year after year, the best epeeists in the world rendezvous in the "Ciutat de Barcelona", demonstrated by the fact that Olympic champions, World champions and World Cup winners of the last two decades have all participated in recent editions of this famous competition.
For the sixth consecutive year the competition is to be held in Ladies Epee with the best of the world's fencers expected to participate.
